Georgina Potter has exhibited all over the country and, deservedly, won many prizes. This is your chance to learn how she approaches skies, the more dramatic the better. These tend to be quick pieces following our ever changing weather.

Georgina’s principle inspiration comes from changing light patterns and the way they, in turn, affect the landscape. She paints instinctively, working directly from life on smaller boards en plein air. Her fast and decisive marks on the canvas keep mark making as lively and energetic as the weather itself.

Hopefully you will be working outside, however the studio is ready to accommodate everyone if the weather turns.

Responding to Place, Acrylic

The landscape around our Bransbury studio is often referred to as quintessential Hampshire with its chalkstream, thatched cottages, Bransbury Common, farmland and byways. There are images of such landscapes on biscuit tins and jigsaw puzzles in every gift shop in the country.

In this workshop you will be encouraged to think about how it feels to be in the landscape, and part of it.

You will be in an ancient landscape, walking in the footsteps of people long gone, but experiencing your time there in the present.

From the landscape around Bransbury you will be making experimental drawings from walking and observation in spaces that are both seen and experienced. In the studio abstract acrylic painting responses, incorporating collage, will be explored.

Pattern in the Landscape

Join Rosie MacCurrach for an exciting workshop exploring the space, texture and pattern around the Studio at Bransbury. Explore a pattern-based interpretation of the landscape around the river Dever through drawing from observation.  We will look at how patterns, rhythms and textures can represent a sense of place, an atmosphere, movement and light.

 Drawing with pencils, charcoal and ink, you will explore different ways of interpreting your surroundings through experimental mark making.  You will also look at how you choose what to draw, pulling out of the scene the patterns and shapes that pull you in. 

You will explore composition as the counterweight to pattern. Day 1 will focus on pattern and day 2/3 on combining pattern and composition.

Imaginary Landscape

Taking inspiration from both real and imagined landscapes this paper-based drawing and painting course will use the shapes, colours, motifs and patterns found in our surroundings as a starting point for a series of abstract or semi-abstract works.

Annabel Tilley will lead you through a series of exercises that will introduce you to the various ways that pattern can add variety and enhance a drawing or painting. 

By the end of the course, you will have been introduced to the work of artists who use pattern; and you will leave the workshop with new and experimental work and ideas about how pattern can be included to transform your drawing and painting.

River, A Drawing Meditation

Spend two days at this idyllic riverside studio, as close to the water’s edge as you could be. Sitting, watching, listening, reflecting, writing, drawing – in quiet contemplation, responding to all the senses. With plenty of space, you will be able to work inside the studio, and out on the riverbank

Katie will be using guided meditation and mark-making exercises to help you settle into the space, find your own connection, use your breath and body to lead the process of drawing, through all the senses.

A river is a complex, beautiful setting. Sights, sounds, smells and emotions are triggered by the river and its environment. The River Dever, a Hampshire chalk stream, runs across the front of the studio at Bransbury.You will be working on large, experimental drawings representing your engagement with the river Dever.

Abstracting the Landscape

This two-day workshop is based on the landscape around the studio at Bransbury. It will focus on composition and arranging shapes of colour based on sketchbook work.

The materials to be used will mainly be drawing pens, pencil, charcoal, newspaper, ink, chalk, followed by oil painting, or other wet media in the studio

Each morning students will start work outside with small sketchbook studies. A short demonstration by Michael will show you how he uses his sketchbook with ink and coloured chalk.

In the afternoon you will work in the studio painting from the mornings drawings. You will be using big brushes, newspaper and your hands to put down large areas of colour on paper.

This dynamic and experimental approach is exciting and produces unexpected results.
