Join Kate Measham for a day drawing moving figures. Discover the way clothes move with a body. Record stillness, slow movements and rapid, explosive gestures. An exciting, and tantalising workshop to help you consider what you can distill of a moment.

You will do a series of exercises to show you different ways of interpreting the moving body. The drawings become something very different to photographs or film, possibly an expression of time and rhythm.

The fun of this workshop is that there are no correct answers, everyone finds their own way in to the strangeness of drawing a moving object.

What to Expect in this Figure Drawing, Music and Movement workshop.

This is a drawing class; any materials may be used.

Throughout the day there will be a series of exercises with a clothed model and music. There will be reference to the rhythm and tone of the music. Sometimes the model will be still and at other times they will respond to the tutors instructions, or the inspiration of the music.

You will be looking at the rhythm and pattern of movement. Music combined with rhythm and movement will encourage you to draw with varied marks and strokes. You will capture the model’s movement and tempo, whether explosive, calm, or repetitive.

This is exciting drawing to undertake and exciting drawings to see.

Materials

We will be doing a lot of drawings. Make sure you have:

  • pad of A1 cartridge paper,
  • charcoal of different sizes including BIG,
  • pencils, and graphite, if you wish
  • a rubber,
  • some kitchen paper or chamois leather to rub out the charcoal,
  • fixative
  • ink and a brush
  • something to attach paper to a board
  • masking tape
  • white chalk/pastel plus a couple of colours (no more than two)
  • newspaper to protect the floor beneath your easel
  • a bag for rubbish
  • lunch

If you want to use acrylic paint please bring all associated materials. We will be moving at the pace of the charcoal and ink.
