What to Expect on Beginners Oil Painting October 2026

Day One, learning to use the equipment

The introduction day will be basic mixing and tonal work. You will learn about the equipment, from supports like canvas, board, or paper, paints, palettes, palette knives, and brushes. Discover some of the different equipment, and how to use it.

The morning will start with charcoal drawing exercises. Next, you will approach the same exercises with paint.

In the afternoon you will paint your first still life using the tones you have mixed in the morning.

Day Two, all about the colour mixing

This busy day will involve a lot of mixing paint, learning how to achieve the colour you want. You will paint your own colour wheels. This will involve a lot of mixing. The more you practise mixing, the more you will be able to create the colours you want to use. The day will end with a still life using the colours you have mixed.

Once you have had a go at this course, it is up to you to keep going. You will have the basic skills necessary to tackle all sorts of painting challenges. I will suggest things for you to do on your own at home, and courses for you to investigate.
