A two day workshop to flex your new painting skills.
This simple approach to painting a picture with oils will help you set up a still life by focusing on composition, making drawings, creating oil sketches, and finally, painting a picture.
Why two days? You’re discovering something new and may need time to learn how to create your artwork. This experience helps you not just follow along, but engage with the process, boosting your creativity and understanding of techniques. You can try out different objects, lighting, and angles while improving your skills.
This enjoyable process will guide you in making a strong picture, as you gradually gain confidence in your artistic abilities, ensuring that you enjoy every moment of the creative journey.
Who should take this workshop?

It’s tailored for students who have used oil paints before but don’t feel ready for advanced classes.

What to expect on Oil Painting for Beginners, the Next Step, 2026
On this two day workshops you will be given many exercises to try. This will involve lots of quick sketches followed by more in depth studies once you have decided which direction interests you most.
Kate encourages you to experiment, play and enjoy the medium. Oil paints are forgiving; you don’t have to tiptoe around them as though they might somehow break. You will try an intuitive approach as well as more measured sketches. It is important that you enjoy the process. Often the work that has gone wrong are the pieces that teach you the most. These ones can be the pieces on which you have worked hardest. This is where you learn to try again, and see what happens.
Day One, Looking and Learning
The more you look, the more you’ll see.
On the first day, you’ll create quick sketches to plan your still life, focusing on its layout (or composition), colours, and tones. In the afternoon, you’ll start painting sketches. By the end of the day you should have at least three ideas to continue working on for the next day.
Day Two, working on more than one picture at once
This is a busy day. You have sketches from day one so a lot of the thinking has been done. Today you will work on at least two of the sketches.
