Size Matters: THINK BIG

  • Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th March, 10am – 4.30pm
  • £180/person
  • Materials will be provided.
  • Coffee and Tea readily available, please bring something to eat for lunch.

In this class you will be thinking about how, and why size matters.

It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner, or you have never drawn larger than A4 …because …before you know it you will be stretching through an aerobic workout, reaching areas of paper you hadn’t contemplated before. This is surprisingly physical.

There will be elements of mixed media, and various different drawing techniques. You will contemplate the different compositional approach needed for a big picture. If a drawing is larger than life size what are you saying; does it DEMAND more? Come and experiment and see what you think.

Let’s not be boring doing all drawings the same size. Size matters. Explore, experiment and grow. In this class you will be doing huge drawings (about 4′ x 4′) . See and feel the difference size makes.

All Thursdays:

June 14, 21, 28

July 5, 12

August 2,9,16,23, and 30

Everyone has complicated commitments over the summer months; Drawing and Painting classes don’t always find a place on ‘to do’ lists.

This summer I plan to hold an open regular class on Thursdays.  It will be quite casual with drawing, painting  and general free for all encouraged.

There won’t be separate afternoon sessions – you buy a day and turn up anytime between 10.00 and closing time at 16.00.  If you opt for all 10 sessions it will be £350 for the summer.  If you opt for individual days, which you need to specify, it will be £50/day.  Priority will be given to those that book for the full summer.

FIRST COME FIRST SERVE

I will provide coffee, tea and biscuits as usual, advice to those that want it, drawing exercises at 10.00, and a general theme/plan for the day.

Measured Life Drawing

9th May, 10.00-13.00

£45/morning, Including  model

At the Riverside Cottage

Bransbury, SO21 3QJ

Foreshortened legs, unusual sitting positions, distorted bodies and any number of other Life Drawing ‘problems’ can be overcome with measuring. All too often  you think you know where a line should be because you absolutely know where the leg/arm/foot/hand SHOULD be…but maybe it isn’t quite like that.

Learn to trust in measuring.

We will provide materials, easels, drawing boards etc.

LARGER THAN LIFE

16th May, 10.00 – 17.00

£120/all day, including materials and lunch, and model

At the Riverside Cottage

This class is slightly in the spirit of ‘let’s NOT make boring pictures’. This will be life drawing on a grand scale…and something of an adventure.

An easy  option is to come to a life class, make yourself comfortable and draw the body in front of you in the same way you drew it last time.  Here you will change the scale of your work – BIG is beautiful, certainly physical, always exciting.

Let’s take the anxiety out of the studio and introduce a sense of playfulness, exploration and adventure. Practise certainly improves drawing skills, but it doesn’t make you think about new approaches and new ideas.

You will use a mix of drawing media and big paper.

Riverside will provide a light lunch, and we will provide the materials.  It is quite a messy affair so I would suggest you wear old clothes.

Music and Movement

IMG_3921

23rd May, 10.00 – 17.00

£120/all day, including materials and lunch, and model

At the Riverside Cottage

People move.

In this class you will be looking at the rhythm and pattern of movement, combined with rhythm and movement in music. You will capture the model’s movement and tempo, whether explosive, calm, or repetitive.

There will be a series of exercises designed to show you different ways of interpreting the moving body. The drawings become something very different to photographs or film, but an expression of time and rhythm.

This is exciting drawing to undertake and exciting drawings to see.

Riverside will provide a light lunch, and we will provide the materials.

If you are interested in all the courses we offer a £25 reduction – £260 for three.
