New Tutors with Hampshire Art studio

This term we are introducing three tutors who are new to Hampshire Art studio. They fit in with all that we are trying to make available, whether online or in the studio. We look for experienced teachers who are successful artists, and can bring something of their enthusiasm to their classes, exciting and inspiring our students.

Alex Fowler NEAC

Some of you may have joined us for the Colour and Composition online course with Alex in the first half of this term. His thoughtful approach to colour and composition has sent a number of you back to still life painting; we all want to experiment with his approach to colour mixing and how to construct a still life.

Alex Fowler is a London based Painter and Art Teacher. He paints Portraits, Still Lifes and Landscapes, mainly in oils. He loves the challenge of working directly in front of the motif. The battle of how to translate the extraordinary range of light and colour we experience in the world into paint, is a constant fascination. He has been sharing his passion through his teaching over a number of years, running classes in Landscape, Figure and Still Life Painting.

In 2002 Alex won a Drawing Scholarship from the New English Art Club, one of the country’s most prestigious exhibiting societies, and he was elected a member in 2004.

Alex Fowler has a course with Hampshire Art studio, in the studio, Covid permitting, on 20th and 21st March, Painting the Model from Life, Colour Workshop.

Anastasia Pollard RP

We are delighted to welcome Anastasia Pollard onto the team. This talented artist has studied all over the world, winning prizes and commissions at every turn. Fortunately for us she lives in Winchester. This term she is teaching an online portrait course and we look forward to her teaching in our studio before too long.

Anastasia Pollard is a portrait and figure painter and teacher based in the U.K. She studied at both the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in the USA and the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. Her work has been included in the annual exhibitions of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and was previously included in the BP Portrait Award in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012 & 2017.

Sarah Chalmers

Sarah Chalmers embodies the enthusiasm, knowledge and wisdom we appreciate at Hampshire Art studio. She has spent her life travelling across the world armed with a watercolour box and a sketchpad.

Sarah Studied at Hornsey and Chelsea Art Schools in the heady days of the late 70’s. She ploughed a lonely landscape furrow amongst the conceptions, installations and abstractions of the time. Some of her student etchings were picked up by Jeremy Maas, and sold at his prestigious Clifford Street gallery. Following a stint at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Aix-en-Provence Sarah continued her landscape painting, and over the years has shown successfully at The New Grafton, Cadogan Contemporary, Art First and Agnews amongst others.

She has work is in the corporate collections of BP, Arco British and AT Kearney, and  in a number of distinguished private collections.

Her work has been admired by notable artists such as Sir Kyffin Williams, Maurice Cockrill and Arthur Boyd – she was awarded a residency at the Bundanon Trust.

Painting itself, and especially landscape painting goes in and out of fashion, but Sarah has doggedly continued, in all weathers, to draw inspiration from the landscape that she paints.

Sarah spent some time in Australia last year. The plan was travelling, painting, a time as artist in residence and a series of exhibitions. Sadly her time was cut short by the pandemic and her plans put on hold. If you visit her site you can see her evocative watercolours painted from her time in Australia. https://www.sarahchalmers.co.uk/shop/
