Whether you are a beginner, or a bit rusty, come and join Kate Measham on this oil painting course, this Autumn.
There is a mystique about oil painting; don’t be put off. We think it is more forgiving, and more exciting than other media, and with endless options. Once you have mastered the basics of painting with oils there will be no stopping you. A whole new world will open.
Join Kate Measham, experienced artist and teacher, to learn the basics on this Beginners Oil Painting course.

Part I
On the first workshop you will learn about the equipment: supports (canvas, board or paper), paints, mediums, solvents, palettes and palette knives, and brushes. Discover what they are, different types, and how to use them. You will learn about basic mixing and tonal work.
The morning will start with charcoal drawing exercises. Next, you will approach the same exercises with paint.
The first day will be charcoal/paint exercises. Day two will be painting a picture in tones.

Part II
Part II will cover mixing the paint, and an introduction to colour. You will do a lot of mixing and working out how to create the colours you want to use. You will paint your own colour wheels using two different palettes.
The second day will be a painting using a restricted palette. Once you have had a go at this, it is up to you to keep going. You will have the basic skills necessary to tackle all sorts of painting challenges. Mostly you will need to practice, play with paints, and generally DIVE IN. I will suggest things for you to do on your own at home, and courses for you to investigate.
You will need your own equipment for these two days. I will help you with this.

Why learn to paint with oils…
Many students have started oil painting with Kate Measham at Art Draw Paint, embracing the vibrant world of colors and textures that this medium offers. Under her expert guidance, they explore the fundamentals of mixing paints, mastering brush techniques, and understanding the properties of oil, which allows for a richness and depth that other mediums cannot provide. As the classes progress, students find themselves not only improving their skills but also gaining a greater appreciation for the artistic process, experimenting with their creativity while receiving personalized feedback and encouragement from Kate in a supportive environment.

This has enabled students to join other classes including “on the Shoulders of Giants” a painting series looking at work by individual artists.
Further classes taught by tutors such as Sarah Spackman, Andrew James, James Bland, Sam Clayden and Michael Weller have been possible once you have mastered the basics.
