Looking into the Future…

There are some classes set in concrete for 2018 and others are bubbling away trying to find a slot. There will be regular classes at Ramshill, my studio in East Winterslow, classes at Rum’s Eg in Romsey, at Riverside Cottage, Bransbury and other venues. Keep a look out for regular updates on new classes.

Every Thursday there will be either drawing or painting classes and more beginners oil painting classes at Ramshill.

Keep a look out for ‘Larger than Life, Life Drawing’, ‘Thinking Aloud’ a course to encourage you to take risks, be creative and get more from your work. Also ‘Big Drawings in Challenging Places’, ‘Dynamic Landscapes, Mixed Media, Drawing, Print and Paint’, ‘Music and Movement’, and ‘Experimental Drawing’. There will be restorative retreats at Riverside Cottage and excursions to galleries and other places of interest.

AND a very exciting trip to Andalucia in October.

There is a mystique about painting with oils paints that needs to be shattered.  In these classes you will learn, from scratch, the basic mechanics of painting with oils.

This is perfect for total beginners, people who know about watercolour but not oils, people who haven’t picked up a brush in a while, or those who have been given a lovely set of paints and don’t know what to do next.

….AND PERFECT AS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT

I will teach you the basic skills that you can start to build upon. I provide the materials needed for this early stage. If you wish you can join the follow on class Oil Painting for Beginners, II.

Oil Painting for Beginners III (slow painting)

November 21st and 28th, 9.30am – 4.30pm

£145/two days

Materials list provided before first session

If this was a recipe the dish would be a delicious slow cooked stew with layers of flavour and interest. Your ‘slow painting’ will have time to develop complexity too. You will build up a relationship with your picture that is quite different to a flashy 3 hour number.

This course will involve a Still Life set up that you will paint over four sessions, (two days).

Some pictures just take longer.

A picture of twelve hours is very different to one of three hours.  Your engagement with it is different, the way you deal with the paint is different.

This is to encourage you to go for the longer game occasionally. Nobody wants to spend hours on a picture that they don’t like very much so you will look at planning and composition.

This is more of a Test match than a T20 (probably lost my audience there).

Oil Painting for beginners – II (Colour)

October 17th and 24th, Nov 7th, 9.30am – 12.30pm

£130/3 classes

Materials list before each class

Three Classes, Three Different Approaches to Colour

If you have done the Beginners Oil Painting class the question is what to do next. On this course you will start to look at colour.

Colour is a huge, limitless topic, but you will start by looking at three different approaches.

You will look at painting with a limited palette, from tone to colour, and alla prima. The idea is to show you that sometimes limitations are liberating, allowing you to explore different aspects of painting. You will see that you are the master of your painting and you can paint it any way you want…with a bit of practise.
