Trees – Portrait or Symbol?

with Kate Measham

Poets, writers, painters, sculptors, artists of all sorts have been inspired by trees. Their majesty, age, embrace, rise and fall with seasons, the bleakness of a dying tree and the wonder of new growth have inspired people in a variety of ways. This course offers a fresh look, exploring different approaches with reference to creative giants over a great spread of time.

You will be thinking about the symbolism of trees, atmosphere, shape, colour, and different forms of representation. You will produce many pieces of work enjoying the process of recording, observing and discovery. Drawing will be important.

If you have followed any of our ‘On the Shoulders of Giants’ workshops you may recognise a similarity – instead of working from one artist we are examining one theme.

What to expect on this course

The aim of this course is to think about how artists have used trees in their work and to apply these discoveries to how you approach your own work.

Each day will have a specific focus and you will look at artists according to the theme of the day. The days will be: Portrait or Symbol, then, Pattern, Space, Texture, Colour, and finally a combination of the two. You will work doing quick sketches in the class, referring to work by other artists. Next we will be trying different approaches with ‘real’ trees.

There will be discussion about trees, what they represent to us, and to others. If you want to continue the work at home between classes it will be encouraged.

This ‘blot’ painting by Alexander Cozens was made over 200 years ago. Cozens put blots of ink on a page and then worked back into them to give the impression of trees, rocks and landscapes.

This course is a fresh look at trees, looking at how different artists have approached them across a great spread of time.
