The Hampshire Avon Painting Workshop with Sam Clayden
The talented Sam Clayden will guide you through this workshop as you capture your days by the Avon. You will learn through paint and drawn sketches.
The River Avon is a chalk stream in the south of England. It rises in Wiltshire, flows through Salisbury, continues through west Hampshire, eventually reaching the English Channel through Christchurch, Dorset.The chalk streams of southern England are a precious resource with their own flora and fauna. Interestingly, 80% of the world’s chalk streams are in England.
We will start at the edge of Amesbury, within sight of the Abbey and the southern mill.

Beginners Oil Painting Autumn ’25 with Kate Measham
If you are new to oil painting, these are the classes for you. Maybe it has been a while since you picked up a brush. Perhaps you need a reminder to boost your confidence. Whether you are a beginner, or a bit rusty, come and join in.

On the Shoulders of Giants – Poussin, with Kate Measham,
At first glance Poussin may be thought of as old fashioned, with nothing to offer the contemporary artist. This would be a mistake. Cy Twombly, Francis Bacon, Picasso, and Cezanne, giants among painters, make reference to the Poussin’s influence. Over these four classes we are going to look at colour, composition, and how other artists have been influenced by this wonderful painter.

- Students can work in whatever media they wish. However, the first class will be using charcoal and ink.

These four afternoons is a long approach to ‘On the Shoulders of Giants. There is much to explore. The course is not about how to use individual materials; it is about how to find new ideas and approaches. This is space to strive towards innovation in your own work.
