Andalucia: Landscape and Portraiture in February and March 2025

There is nothing like grey skies to make you think about warm winter breaks!

We are delighted to have three painting workshop weeks this winter with talented, experienced tutors at beautiful Casa Rosa, Spain. Over the last few years this has meant painting and lunch outside during the day, and dinner inside gathered around a table, with a log fire. Rosie Tatham and her team make you feel at home, in a companionable atmosphere, with delicious food and excellent tutors. Don’t miss it.

Jutta Gloeckner, Painting and Drawing in Andalucia, 2025

limited spaces available

15th – 22nd February, 2025

Jutta, an experienced artist and teacher, is planning to challenge her group of developing painters, with our Mediterranean mountain landscape. Casa Rosa is set among mature gardens and olive orchards, with plants, streams, lake and mountains.

Describing her approach to teaching Jutta says,”In my teaching, I try to familiarise myself with each student’s work and aim to help them develop and discover their individual style using their preferred media. I avoid a prescriptive style of teaching and I prefer to encourage and nurture personal enthusiasms. I will demonstrate and even correct students’ if they seem to need it.

I like to suggest a theme, usually taking inspiration from a range of artists. The group will be encouraged to work independently and will come together for guidance.

Jutta’s course is suitable for all abilities and different media. She gives clear guidance on composition, colour and approach. Having had an extensive academic education in both London and Germany the knowledge and skill she shares is always enlightening.

Michael Weller, Andalucian Landscape and Abstraction, March 2025

2nd – 9th March, 2025

When I asked Michael what he would like to teach at Casa Rosa he said, “We’ll try a few things I find helpful with my own painting. I paint in an abstract, general way. Big shapes. A few colours. A sense of the place. Enjoying the paint”.

Michael will give demonstrations and go round to talk to artists one-to-one. Help will be given.   Subjects to be considered: in the Casa Rosa garden, lemon and cypress trees, olive groves, views across the heavenly mountains, quiet nearby villages with small churches and winding lanes. You start each day by trying a few compositions – responding intuitively to what seems interesting – line drawings, colour studies. Later you’ll work more slowly, having found the compositions you really want to paint.

By the end of the week, students’ drawings will be simpler and their colours clearer. Michael’s students do really well but he doesn’t want them to paint like him and doesn’t impose his style on them. People’s work will be noticeably their own, unique, distinct.

Andrew James: Portrait Painting Masterclass in Andalucia, March 2025

9th – 16th March, 2025

This course is designed to help students build and refine their portrait drawing and painting skills. Whilst looking to develop futher facility in the use of oil paint, graphite and charcoal, alongside improvement of observational skills, there will be a strong emphasis upon generating expression in the work and a more powerful communication in their portrait painting.

 Topics covered:

  • The structural understanding and drawing of the head and face
  • Painting from observation: students will learn how to analyse and translate form into colour
  • How to mix and apply paint in a more expressive manner

By the end of this course you will have a greater facility with oil paint as an expressive medium. An improved set of observational skills will enable a more successful ability to record the structure of the head and face, so achieving greater likeness. The exercises during the course will help you to have a better informed use of colour and tone, and stronger drawing skills.
