Mixed media is one of the most exciting areas of art. It brings together different skills in an immediate and exciting way. This class is suitable for anyone – if you are a total beginner at art classes and are a bit nervous about drawing have a go at this taster day.

This day workshop with Francesca Shakespeare will explore the exciting versatility of plaster and bas relief. Most materials will be supplied. When I was discussing the course with Francesca we talked about yoghurt pots, found objects, and the excitement of mixing media. Her infectious enthusiasm and encouragement will inspire all artists, whatever their standard or experience.

Francesca will introduce techniques that explore the interface between sculpture and painting, between 2D and 3D, and give the student a whole new take on creating artworks.

Our taster day is to whet your appetite for a series of workshops with Francesca that will further develop these techniques into sophisticated panel paintings. You will be drawing on works of Medieval and Renaissance art, as well as contemporary and personal inspiration.

This workshop is suitable for all levels and ages and will cover press moulding and casting. We will experiment with patination and colouring the plaster, and discuss how to incorporate the bas reliefs into larger works. You will go home with a series of small panels as well as knowledge and ideas that you can develop further on your own or come back and join a longer course.
