This week is suitable for anyone who wants space and time to do their own thing. If you are joining us for week one with Kate Measham as your tutor this is an opportunity to stay and apply all that was learnt, or simply to be creative under your own steam.

This is a stand alone art retreat week – open to anyone. You do not have to take part in week one to join us for week two.

“Andalucia is one of the most beautiful corners of Europe, where the excesses of modern life do not seem to have taken root and travellers are welcomed as honoured guests. Beloved by Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway, it is the Spain of Carmen, Figaro and Flamenco. Rich with the legacies of the Moors and Romans its charm and serenity will captivate you.” Sunday Times

Casa Rosa in the Spring: Wild flower heaven

Wild flowers in the Andalucian countryside

In late April join us for art and culture in the Axarquía, the mountainous area to the north east of Malaga. The hills and orchards of Andalucía will be ripe with citrus fruit and wild flowers. Nestling into the landscape, Casa Rosa will have oranges, garden flowers and fruit growing in the orchards and around the houses.

This is week two of our Spring in Andalucia programme.

This week is untutored . If you are interested in joining a week with Kate Measham as your tutor have a look at Casa Rosa, Spring 2020

What to expect on an untutored art retreat

In this Artists take over Casa Rosa week, you the artists, are removed from home concerns, will be free to draw and paint in the landscape, the gardens, patios or studio. Snacks, meals and drinks will be regular and delicious. At some point there will be optional distractions such as walks or models  provided. In addition, there will be the facilities of Casa Rosa Estate – tennis court, pool, ping pong table – freely available and the nearby village only a walk away.

For an inclusive fee of £950 you will be collected from Malaga airport, all week wonderful meals will be provided, along with delicious drinks and snacks. You will be returned to the airport at the end of the week.

You only have to book a return flight.

If you are interested in bringing your own group of students to Casa Rosa this is a perfect way to give it a trial run first.

Food, fresh from the orchards and markets

Lemons from the garden

Meals will be a communal affair with Rosie, her helpers and the other artists and guests eating together. Casa Rosa sits in the middle of its own orchards and Spring will see the orchards bursting with new growth. The house and cottages are  full of delightful surprises, pictures, pottery and antiques collected locally and from years of travel.

There is a tennis court, swimming pool, delightful gardens and  table tennis  to divert you and relax you. Rosie can advise you about walks in the area. You can use the studio at anytime.

Life Drawing, Three Ways, Retreat

Measured Life Drawing

9th May, 10.00-13.00

£45/morning, Including  model

At the Riverside Cottage

Bransbury, SO21 3QJ

Foreshortened legs, unusual sitting positions, distorted bodies and any number of other Life Drawing ‘problems’ can be overcome with measuring. All too often  you think you know where a line should be because you absolutely know where the leg/arm/foot/hand SHOULD be…but maybe it isn’t quite like that.

Learn to trust in measuring.

We will provide materials, easels, drawing boards etc.

LARGER THAN LIFE

16th May, 10.00 – 17.00

£120/all day, including materials and lunch, and model

At the Riverside Cottage

This class is slightly in the spirit of ‘let’s NOT make boring pictures’. This will be life drawing on a grand scale…and something of an adventure.

An easy  option is to come to a life class, make yourself comfortable and draw the body in front of you in the same way you drew it last time.  Here you will change the scale of your work – BIG is beautiful, certainly physical, always exciting.

Let’s take the anxiety out of the studio and introduce a sense of playfulness, exploration and adventure. Practise certainly improves drawing skills, but it doesn’t make you think about new approaches and new ideas.

You will use a mix of drawing media and big paper.

Riverside will provide a light lunch, and we will provide the materials.  It is quite a messy affair so I would suggest you wear old clothes.

Music and Movement

23rd May, 10.00 – 17.00

£120/all day, including materials and lunch, and model

At the Riverside Cottage

People move.

In this class you will be looking at the rhythm and pattern of movement, combined with rhythm and movement in music. You will capture the model’s movement and tempo, whether explosive, calm, or repetitive.

There will be a series of exercises designed to show you different ways of interpreting the moving body. The drawings become something very different to photographs or film, but an expression of time and rhythm.

This is exciting drawing to undertake and exciting drawings to see.

Riverside will provide a light lunch, and we will provide the materials.

If you are interested in all the courses we offer a £25 reduction – £260 for three.

Contact Kate Measham for more information, or to book a place on a course.
