The New Year, a New Decade, is on the horizon. This is a good time for you to make art one of your New Year’s Resolutions
I make resolutions every year – some I keep, some I don’t. Whatever happens it is a good moment to pause, and look forward.
This coming year I plan to spend more time painting, and to set the time aside in my diary. Second on my to-do list is to take courses so I can try new ways of doing things. I have my eye on Antony Williams and his Egg Temperacourse at the end of February.
New this year is the Art Club. The studio is open on Wednesdays for the club, from 10.00 – 5.00. It is a great place to get away from the regular cares of life, and paint or draw without distraction. There are tables, easels, tea and coffee, a beautiful view plus time to chat and compare notes with other artists. On the second Wednesday of each month there will be a life model in the evening from 6.00-9.00pm. This is included in the Club fee.
If you are missing the sun have a look at the two different weeks in Andalucia in the Spring. The first week, 18th – 25th April Casa Rosa, a tutored week with me, Kate Measham leading the group. The second week, 25th April – 2nd May, Artists Take Over Casa Rosa is untutored but all the food, studio space, and glorious surroundings of Casa Rosa available.
Keep an eye on HAMPSHIREART studio throughout 2020 – we are planning more masterclasses, art, yoga, and wellbeing classes, and many fun one or two day courses.

I am a beginner- where should I start , or how to start again as a rusty returner?
This is the class for you. Your tutor will guide you through the process of learning to draw and paint in a step-by-step fashion. Drawing underpins everything we do and is how children communicate visually, before they can write.
You can do it.
Everything you learn whist drawing can be translated into how you paint. Oil painting, though tricky to start with, is probably one of the most instinctive, forgiving and enjoyable ways to paint. It combines with drawing in an easy, natural way.
What will I learn?
At HAMPSHIRE ART studio we view drawing as the foundation of art practise. You will learn to use charcoal, different pencils, ink, brush, graphite and anything else we can find. As important as the tools you use to draw is what you draw ON. You will try different papers and other supports.
Elements learnt with drawing are essential in painting practise. The course will include: measured drawing, expressive drawing, structure, mark making, composition, tone, texture, light, styles and approaches and use various different materials.
All the above will be addressed in painting with oils. Also you will look at colour theory.
How will the course work?
Students will learn in a variety of ways, from still lifes, copying works of masters, drawing from life and from the imagination. You will make studies from still-lifes etc. to develop your skills of composition, draughtsmanship and modelling. We will also investigate the work of master artists to learn their techniques.
The same elements used in drawing will be studied with regard to oil painting. In addition you will look at colour theory.
The course will run for two consecutive days each month for 9 months over the period of a year. Each month we will introduce you to one of the basic building blocks of art. You will approach it via drawing and then into painting.
There will be a certain amount of optional homework between classes. You will be encouraged to keep sketchbooks.
How will my drawing and oil painting progress be assessed?
Each month there will be one to one, and group feedback sessions.
There will be continuous dialogue and evaluation of work produced. Your progress will be mapped by both you and the tutor so you are both aware of any anxieties and aspirations. Drawing into Oil Painting for beginners will be a carefully planned series of classes that build on what you learn from one month to the next.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
This year will be a springboard for you.
After a year’s work you will be considerably more knowledgeable about where your interests lie. You should have full sketchbooks and a bulging portfolio of work.
We can help you decide what the next step you take will be. A year of regular classes, student and tutor support and a certain amount of private study will set you firmly on the road to whatever area of interest you wish to pursue. If you want to join other classes with HAMPSHIRE ART studio you could look at intermediate classes, and masterclasses.
Is there accommodation available?
We can advise you about different places to stay. There is plenty of parking at the studio.
How do I purchase this course?

“Andalucia is one of the most beautiful corners of Europe, where the excesses of modern life do not seem to have taken root and travellers are welcomed as honoured guests. Beloved by Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway, it is the Spain of Carmen, Figaro and Flamenco. Rich with the legacies of the Moors and Romans its charm and serenity will captivate you.” Sunday Times
Casa Rosa in the Autumn: Wild flower heaven
In early October join us for art and culture in the Axarquía, the mountainous area to the north east of Malaga. The hills and orchards of Andalucía will be ripe with olives, fruit and wild flowers. Nestling into the landscape, Casa Rosa will have garden flowers and fruit growing in the orchards and around the houses.
If you join us for this tutored week at Casa Rosa you can expect an intensive painting and drawing programme, a week of delicious, healthy food made from local produce, and a week in one of the most delightful, comfy, luxurious houses in southern Spain.
For an inclusive fee of £1,550, you will be collected from Malaga airport, all week wonderful meals will be provided, along with delicious drinks and snacks. You will be returned to the airport at the end of the week.
You only have to book a return flight. No hidden extras.
Kate Measham, an experienced artist and teacher, will tutor the group from the exquisite setting of Casa Rosa ( do look at the website to see more about the buildings and the estate) with our host, Rosie Tatham welcoming you to her home.
Kate Measham, tutor
Kate has been teaching and running courses in Hampshire for over 10 years including regular courses on the Greek Island Zakynthos.
Having studied ‘Visual Art through Drawing’ at Winchester School of Art, Kate has since expressed her ideas through a range of media in painting, drawing, printing, wood turning and teaching, always using her imagination and expressing those ideas figuratively, or semi abstractly.
Drawing is the cornerstone of Kate’s work. She is keen to encourage her students to explore, investigate, be intuitive and imaginative through drawing. Despite the energy, strength and colour of Kate’s artistic style, she is not interested in creating a house style. Students are encouraged to find their own voice and to develop the necessary skills to explore it.
Kate exhibits her work in many exhibition spaces including at Josie Eastwood Gallery, The Angelus Gallery, and Fisherton Mill.
Locally Sourced Food and Wine
The art weeks at Casa Rosa have a house party feel.
You will eat most meals together with Kate, Rosie and the other students. Casa Rosa sits in the middle of its own orchards and Autumn will see the orchards bursting with fruit. The house and cottages are full of delightful surprises, pictures, pottery and antiques collected locally and from years of travel.
Food is an important part of the pleasure of staying at Casa Rosa. Rosie’s approach is to serve warm salads and raw food and to combine that with other very comforting solutions to restore the heart and soul after a day of hard labour at the easel. Rosie has spent many years travelling the world and discovering different gastronomic delights.
She will attempt to accommodate any nutritional requirements, but please give good warning before you arrive.
The Artists’ Day
Breakfast will be a rolling affair from 8.30 – 9.30am.
From 10.00 until 1.00pm there will be a three-hour, taught morning session in the spacious studio, or outside, followed by a delicious and healthy lunch, a possible siesta and time for you to work on your own projects.
Tuition will resume from 5.00 until 7.00pm for a further 2 hours of painting, or drawing. After the evening session, you will gather for drinks and supper.
There will be many opportunities for discussion and analysis – if you want to – over wine, olives and food.
What to Expect on the Course
The week will be suitable for everyone, from beginners to the experienced. Projects will be personalised to meet all skill levels.
The course will be based at Casa Rosa using their studio and enjoying the panoramic views of dramatic mountains, olive covered farmland and mature, colourful gardens and grounds.
You will work on both quick sketches and paintings and longer projects, looking at how to capture a feeling of place and atmosphere. Colour, palette, tone, mark making, and composition will form the basis of the week.
Risks, experimentation and new approaches will be encouraged.
A sketchbook diary of the week will help you to recall all when you return home.
There is a tennis court, swimming pool, delightful gardens and table tennis to divert you and relax yo. Rosie can advise you about walks in the area. You can use the studio at anytime.
In the middle of the week there will be a rest day. Various activities will be on offer such as walking, or visiting the village of Periana. You may prefer to sit by the pool, catch up on a painting project, or read a book.
Artists are free to join in the lessons as much as they like, or to sit some of them out and enjoy the facilities offered at Casa Rosa and its surrounding area, the Axarquía.
Partners may accompany artists and simply relax and enjoy Casa Rosa.
The group will not exceed 12 artists but non-painting partners are welcome.

Make Casa Rosa, Andalucia, your holiday destination for Spring 2020
It is totally absorbing whilst you are in the act of drawing. It appeals to me physically as I lose myself in creating line, tone, marks. Drawing allows you to experiment, investigate, record, explore. It is thought provoking, challenging, frustrating, exciting. It is instinctive, expressive and purposeful.
As birthday, or Christmas, or anytime presents I give large paintbrushes or sketchbooks to anyone I think will enjoy them. This is in the hope that they will get as much pleasure from them as I do.
Join me for a drawing class on Thursday 26th September, morning, or a Life Drawing Class on Thursday afternoon.
This week both classes will be looking at line, weight of line, and economy of line. The work of Matisse will be used as a reference. Please bring charcoal, paper, any pencils you can lay your hand on.
