with Kate Measham
This workshop is part of the Autumn term oil painting course. It is open to new students who have used oil paints. You will be working from references such sketches and photographs. The exciting thing about working from your own references is that you learn new information at each step. It is not about copying a photograph.

Learning new skills in a supportive environment is an excellent way to gain confidence, and to remind yourself that art courses are life enhancing. Regular sketching helps you to see the world around you, to notice things that have previously passed you by.
The more you use your oils the happier you will be to pick up tubes of paint and dive in…

What to expect on this Oil Painting Course
On this course you will be working from your own sketches and photographs. We will look at what to do next. This will involve lots of quick sketches followed by more in depth studies once you have decided which direction interests you most. Through the process you discover more about thee work beyond the initial images. You will need to bring photographs, and/or sketches. I can discuss this with you when you book.
Kate encourages you to experiment, play and enjoy the medium. Oil paints are forgiving; you don’t have to tiptoe around them as though they might somehow break. You will try an intuitive approach as well as more measured sketches. It is important that you enjoy the process. Often the work that has gone wrong are the pieces that teach you the most. These ones can be the pieces on which you have worked hardest. This is where you learn to try again, and see what happens.
Painting with oils is great fun once you get going, so come along to remind yourself that you CAN do it. You will revisit tone, colour mixing, mark making, composition, still life and more. Good working practise is encouraged and helps to keep your colours clean.
