with Kate Measham

This workshop is part of the Autumn term oil painting course. It is open to new students who have used oil paints. You will be working on abstracting or simplifying still life. Artists whose work we will look at are: Matisse, William Scott and Cedric Morris.

Learning new skills in a supportive environment is an excellent way to gain confidence, and to remind yourself that art courses are life enhancing. Studying the work of other artists expands students horizons and makes all things possible.

The more you use your oils the happier you will be to pick up tubes of paint and dive in…

What to expect on this Oil Painting Course

On this course you will be given many exercises For example, limited palette paintings, palettes used by different artists, thinking about colour, thinking about drawing with paint. This will involve lots of quick sketches followed by more in depth studies once you have decided which direction interests you most.

You will be working on still life trying to simplify an image. To do this you will explore through drawing and colour work.

Kate encourages you to experiment, play and enjoy the medium. Oil paints are forgiving; you don’t have to tiptoe around them as though they might somehow break. You will try an intuitive approach as well as more measured sketches. It is important that you enjoy the process. Often the work that has gone wrong are the pieces that teach you the most. These ones can be the pieces on which you have worked hardest. This is where you learn to try again, and see what happens.

Painting with oils is great fun once you get going, so come along to remind yourself that you CAN do it. You will revisit tone, colour mixing, mark making, composition, still life and more. Good working practise is encouraged and helps to keep your colours clean.
