Elizabeth Hammond

Elizabeth is a British artist who completed her MA in Visual Art at Curtin University of Technology at the end of 2008 and has exhibited as part of several group exhibitions including ‘Constellations: A Large Number of Small Drawings’ at RMIT Gallery in Melbourne. Her first solo exhibition ‘Curiosity of Incongruity’ was held in Perth during October 2011.

Elizabeth’s art practice is primarily about drawing and using drawing in order to describe her incongruous ideas about animals and domestic objects. Much of her work is in private collections and she has completed many commissioned works. Elizabeth enjoys teaching and lecturing, and has facilitated artistic learning at Curtin University, Open Universities Australia and Fremantle Arts Centre. She teaches all ages and has led professional development sessions as well as primary and high school classes alongside undergraduate tutorials.

Artist Statement

Elizabeth Hammond uses drawing to investigate seemingly conflicting objects and animals with different surfaces and textures. She brings together on a surface, incongruous objects and animals in order to highlight the inherent qualities of both, and their place of belonging. Through these incongruous compositions, a provoking and unusual narrative is created for the viewer.

One of the most entrancing characteristics of Elizabeth’s work is her ability to draw the viewer into her way of seeing the world, a naïve, childlike view where one takes nothing for granted and everything is new and interesting; an Alice like wonder at the beauty of unlikely objects….
