with Kate Measham
At ArtDrawPaint we have a number of courses that need some knowledge of how oil painting works. You may be an absolute beginner, or you could have done a bit but forgotten a bit more.
This workshop is aimed at students who may have done a bit of work with oil paints but are not confident and are not ready for masterclasses. You may feel you need reminders before new tasks or you may be total beginner.
As with all newly acquired skills you have to use them, or lose them. Kate Measham has a range of exercises to stretch your abilities, and ways to encourage you to enjoy painting with oils.
Learning new skills in a supportive environment is an excellent way to gain confidence, and to remind yourself that art courses are life enhancing.
The more you use your oils the happier you will be to pick up tubes of paint and dive in…

What to expect on this ‘Early Days with Oils’ workshop
On this two day workshops you will be given many exercises to try. For example, limited palette paintings, palettes used by different artists, thinking about colour, thinking about drawing with paint, monochrome work, and more. This will involve lots of quick sketches followed by more in depth studies once you have decided which direction interests you most.
Kate encourages you to experiment, play and enjoy the medium. Oil paints are forgiving; you don’t have to tiptoe around them as though they might somehow break. You will try an intuitive approach as well as more measured sketches. It is important that you enjoy the process. Often the work that has gone wrong are the pieces that teach you the most. These ones can be the pieces on which you have worked hardest. This is where you learn to try again, and see what happens.
Painting with oils is great fun once you get going, so come along to remind yourself that you CAN do it. You will revisit tone, colour mixing, mark making, composition and a still life. Good working practise helps to keep your colours clean.
