Yoga, Mindfulness, Mark Making

Monday 11th February, £90/day

The Studio, Riverside Cottage, Bransbury SO21 3QJ

You will start the day with a yoga class.

This will be appropriate for any standard, from total beginner to regular practitioner. If you have aches and pains that prevent you from doing certain moves these can be accommodated.

Throughout the class you will be made aware of your body, which parts are being stretched, how you feel when relaxed etc.

After the yoga class you will be experimenting with many different sorts of marks. Particular attention will be paid to how your body feels when making these marks. Gravity, physicality, noise and irritations all play a part in what happens when you start to draw.

After these exercises our yoga teacher will become the model for the day. She will repeat the exercises from the morning class. You will have experienced the tension, pull and release of these poses. These memories will inform the drawings as you work through the day.

Some materials will be provided. Coffee and tea are available but please bring your own lunch

Art Courses for 2019

Christmas is over. It is  time for new year’s resolutions…so what are you going to choose?  Are you a ‘giver-upper’? Will it be… no more chocolate – ever? Or do you try something new…a ‘taker-upper’?

Surprisingly,  the beach photo from Norfolk was taken in January 2018. How about some blue sky thinking for 2019? (try not to focus on the clouds…just enjoy the possibilities)

Oil Painting for Beginners, January 2019

You will start at the very beginning, learning about the equipment, how to mix paints and what to do next. You will be looking at tone and become used to working with oils. After these three days you will be launched into the world of oil painting.

It will be in a fun and supportive atmosphere, though possibly a bit messy. Everyone is welcome.

Drawing is where you start.

The primary way to explore your environment and your emotional response to it can be through drawing.  Children  draw before they  write. Somewhere along the way we complicate matters, lose the pleasure of drawing, and its intuitive possibilities.

This course is designed to encourage you to find the pleasure in something that was once a natural response,  to be inquisitive and give you confidence in your abilities. Drawing is both straightforward and complicated.  Through drawing you can contemplate all the attributes of painting except the hue. It can be an end in itself, or a firm step towards other visual arts.

Starting in January with an introductory week this series of classes is designed to make you look at, and reconsider the many different aspects of a creative process. You will go from looking to seeing and understanding and, finally, towards interpreting your world.

There will be aspects of this course that  feel firmly figurative; this is just a starting place. If you feel a more abstract or expressive approach would be a direction you wish to take this would be warmly encouraged.

Strictly speaking, the word abstract means to separate, or withdraw something from something else.

All students will discover their own area of interest and a visual language that works for them.  The mix of ideas and interests within a group, combined with discussion and research makes for a creatively fertile environment.

There are five weeks of classes, over five months with one concentrated week in the studio, or at another venue, per month. There will be an element of preparation and research between the months.  The more work put into the non-class time will result in a greater appreciation of the subject.

Pricing is designed to encourage students to commit to themselves and take on a demanding  course.

  • Individual classes – £90/day.
  • Complete course (25days) – £1,800 (20% reduction on daily rate)

All abilities are welcomed.

If you would like more information about the course or, about accommodation, please contact me, Kate Measham.

I would like to have an exhibition of the work produced over the months.  At the moment we are looking at some time in June or July.

Tate  definition of Drawing

Drawing is essentially a technique in which images are depicted on a surface by making lines, though drawings can also contain tonal areas, washes and other non-linear marks

Life Drawing

Last Saturday was the first of the spring Life Drawing classes.

The class started the day with yoga, and finished with the yoga teacher as the model for their drawings. The emphasis of the day was to experience the physicality of drawing, and to recognise yourself in the model. This was a new experience for everyone and produced some very interesting drawings.

The next class, 9th May, will be a totally different approach. Measured life drawing is about carefully plotting the body in front of you.

There are still a few places. Contact me, Kate Measham for more information. Life Drawing, Three Ways, Retreat gives you information about all three upcoming life classes.

Yoga, Mindfulness and Life Drawing

Yoga, Mindfulness and Life Drawing,

Holistic Drawing

28th April, 2018

At Riverside Cottage, Bransbury, nr Barton Stacey

Drawing is a wonderful, engaging, cerebral affair; you think, you look, you investigate. The aim of this retreat is to engage further; to include your body and your senses in an holistic act of drawing.

IMG_3921

Instead of a drawing appearing on the paper from a conjunction of thought and sight alone, you will engage with all your senses, with your breathing, and your body.

You will begin the day with yoga to relax, shed tension and enable you to open yourself to the possibility of drawing with other senses.

In the afternoon our yoga teacher becomes the model.  You will engage with the  model who will reflect poses your body will have learnt. You will be able to feel the stretches as you draw taking you to a new level of engagement with your work.

You will learn how drawing is enriched when you work from a calm place in mind and body. You will feel the rhythm of your breath, trust the intelligence of your body, learn to release tension and discover a freedom and potential for inventiveness.

This course is suitable for all artistic and yoga abilities.

  • 10-5pm,
  • £130 to include yoga class, coffee, tea and light lunch, plus materials
