What to Expect on Beginners Oil Painting Winter 2026

Day One

The introduction day will be basic mixing and tonal work, and you will learn about the equipment. This includes supports like canvas, board, or paper. You will explore paints, mediums, and solvents. Palettes, palette knives, and brushes will also be covered; discover what they are, different types, and how to use them.

The morning will start with charcoal drawing exercises. Next, you will approach the same exercises with paint.

The first day will be charcoal and introductory paint exercises.

Day Two

This busy day will involve painting a picture in tones and colour. You will cover mixing paint, plus an introduction to colour, painting your own colour wheels. This will involve a lot of mixing. The more you practise mixing, the more you will be able to create the colours you want to use.

Once you have had a go at this course, it is up to you to keep going. You will have the basic skills necessary to tackle all sorts of painting challenges. I will suggest things for you to do on your own at home, and courses for you to investigate.

You will need your own equipment for these two days. I will help you with this.

Materials

Materials will be supplied. Please bring an apron/overall, a bag for rubbish, a picnic lunch, and a sketchbook for notes.
