Salisbury Chalk Streams, sketching and painting, with Sam Clayden
Five rivers, chalk streams, meet in Salisbury – the Nadder, Ebble, Wylye, Bourne and Avon. The city is built around its magnificent Cathedral, and surrounded by water meadows from these rivers. This combination has inspired artists for centuries. How do you find your own way into this wonderful legacy? Join Sam Clayden for three days in August to start the journey.

John Constable thought Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows was his best work. He spent a lot of time in Salisbury making small sketches and paintings, capturing bite size views of river landscapes.
Leon Kossoff was inspired by this work of Constables’ and he made a number of prints in response to the painting.
Join Sam Clayden in the footsteps of John Constable sketching and painting the rivers and streams in and around this magnificent city. Sam will demonstrate with sketches and work in oil. He will be happy for you to use other materials but the emphasis will be on drawing and oil.

Sam Clayden
Sam Clayden is a portrait and landscape artist working in London.
Alongside working on commissions and personal projects for exhibition, he is an experienced teacher running drawing and painting workshops out of his studio. He regularly exhibits across London and the rest of the UK, including the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries.
When painting landscapes, Sam is primarily interested in capturing moments of light and atmosphere through attention to colour harmony, tone and shape. Having painted hundreds of landscape sketches whenever he has a spare moment, Sam believes anyone can learn to paint convincing impressions of nature so long as they are prepared to fail a lot along their journey.
