We all have things about our houses that may be ordinary, may be the cup you choose to use each day for your first coffee, or a slightly chipped bowl that used to belong to an aunt. You may find the startling yellow of a bleach bottle, or the pleasing shape of a pot of marmite worth a second look. It is the incidentals that make life just a bit brighter.
Often people overlook the everyday but this is how we live our lives; you choose one cup over another, the yellow of the bleach bottle is interesting against the enamel yellow jug. These will be personal, individual pieces of work that will help you find new sources of inspiration.
This course is a space to rethink the familiar, to look afresh – to paraphrase IKEA, ‘A world of inspiration from your home”

What to Expect on this Everyday Object Course
In many ways this is a course about composition and still life.
Week one will be a number of everyday objects provided by me. These will be things that might be overlooked in many art classes. There will be objects brought along for their colour, the interesting shape, strange pattern … whatever I think will become interesting. You will do many quick sketches, colour studies, compositional studies, and we will touch on narrative. Questions you will think about – do you want to be the work to be about shape and colour? Pattern and texture? Is there a narrative that you want to explore?
We will look at a variety of artists and their still life approaches
You will be encouraged to do some work at home between the two dates. Week two will involve further still lifes using your own objects.

Materials
You are free to use whatever materials you would like to use. I would try to keep this flexible by bringing various options with you. Make sure you have everything from brushes to paint to pritt-stick and jam jars.
Please remember to bring a bag for rubbish, and paper and drawing materials for quick sketches.

Please feel free to share this post with other people.
