with Kate Measham

There is a misplaced mystique about oil painting that puts off some students. Don’t let it put you off having a go. Join Kate Measham and learn how to paint, step by step, with this most exciting, forgiving, ancient and modern of media.

This course is over two months with two days of workshops each month. It is aimed at students who may have done a bit of work with oil paints but are not confident, and are not ready for masterclasses. You may feel you need reminders before tackling new tasks.

As with all newly acquired skills you have to use them, or lose them. Kate Measham has a range of exercises to stretch your abilities, and ways to encourage you to enjoy painting with oils. There will be suggested homework to build up your skills between classes.

Learning new skills in a supportive environment is an excellent way to gain confidence, and to remind yourself that art courses are life enhancing.

The more you use your oils the happier you will be to pick up tubes of paint and dive in…

What to expect on this Oil Painting Course

On this course you will be given many exercises to try. For example, limited palette paintings, palettes used by different artists, thinking about colour, thinking about drawing with paint, monochrome work, and more. This will involve lots of quick sketches followed by more in depth studies once you have decided which direction interests you most.

Kate encourages you to experiment, play and enjoy the medium. Oil paints are forgiving; you don’t have to tiptoe around them as though they might somehow break. You will try an intuitive approach as well as more measured sketches. It is important that you enjoy the process. Often the work that has gone wrong are the pieces that teach you the most. These ones can be the pieces on which you have worked hardest. This is where you learn to try again, and see what happens.

Painting with oils is great fun once you get going, so come along to remind yourself that you CAN do it. You will revisit tone, colour mixing, mark making, composition, still life and more. Good working practise is encouraged and helps to keep your colours clean.

Materials

Materials can be found online and in good art shops. Jacksons’ Art is a fairly comprehensive site with good quality own brand products.

For this class please bring a mix of oil paints in large tubes including:

  • titanium white (2 tubes)
  • alizarin crimzon
  • lemon yellow
  • cobalt blue (hue is fine)

In addition you will need:

  • charcoal, pencils, eraser
  • sketchbook, about A4
  • rags, (vital)
  • brushes (a mix of sizes including large), I prefer hoghair, flat
  • odour free solvents, two jam jars with lids.
  • A jug or large jar to store your brushes
  • your palette – disposable is fine
  • a metal palette knife
  • an A4 pad and an A3 pad of oil painting paper, or canvas pads (Jacksons canvas pads are excellent)
  • a bag for your rubbish

You will be doing a large number of sketches. I don’t mind what surface you use but please bring at least 10 to get started.
