Today you will explore aspects of looking and understanding. This will encompass touch, smell, tasting and hearing. There is a lot of information that we miss…today you will incorporate everything into your drawings.

You will be exploring composition and making it work for you. Discover a compositional narrative. Where you put things matters.
A conversation in my house recently went something like,
“Isn’t composition just layout?”
“ No, Dad, it’s much more nuanced”.
Taking composition beyond the rectangle opens new horizons. Explore entirely different supports. How do you appreciate a piece of work that you have to unwrap before you can see it? What happens if you are forced to stand too close to a picture? If a picture self-combusts, is the picture the message, or the combustion?
Composition really matters – a badly thought out composition can ruin an otherwise well crafted piece of work.
Size Matters– Super-sized Drawings

It is so easy to pick up the same old sketchbook and do the same thing, time and again. Let’s make it more interesting.
What size image? What about the space? How do different materials work in different space? What shape paper/canvas/board are you working towards? This is a surprisingly physical class as your work gets bigger you have to adapt how you draw.
It is quite rare to come across a drawing that is larger than life size. It is easy to make a large object smaller, but the reverse presents different problems, emotions, and reactions. You will be drawing a variety of different objects and in a variety of different ways. The size of the drawings alters the viewer’s engagement with the work.
You will be working on the floor, and on 4’square drawing boards.
