Lavender (and wild flower) Workshop – In a Field by the River Test

Lavender fields in the SUN

Art workshop @riverside_yurt_cafe #artclass #wherwellstudio #stockbridge #landscape #lavender #markerpens
A very busy morning at the Riverside Yurt Cafe. After a frantic session trying varied, and new materials the class were treated to delicious raspberry and lavender jam and clotted cream and scones. They seemed to go down well.

Strong work was produced using a variety of different media.  The two most popular seemed to be black marker pens and the wonderful KOH-I-NOOR  12 Brilliant Water Colour Paint,  (Anilinky).  These are available from Amazon for less than £5.00. Well worth a play. The sun shone all morning and we were warm. This is noteworthy.

Keep a look out for Summer Holiday Classes at the Yurt. These will be for children and adults to work together…scavenger hunts, self portrait classes, picnics and mask making. The picnics are particularly good.  These might be good days out for Grannies and Grandpas with their grandchildren. More to follow

Great inspiration from Longstock Park Nursery…and delicious lemon polenta cake

The weather wasn’t perfect, but it didn’t rain and it was warm.  Everyone worked outside at Longstock sketching feverishly. Tea and Lemon Polenta Cake saved the day after hours of hard work and concentration.

The wonderful work produced gives the impression of warmth, light, texture, colour. Incorporated in the work were tall grasses blowing in the wind against the prickly leaved artichokes, and a variety of other plants, architectural features and the everyday functions of a garden nursery.

The herbaceous border, backed by brick and flint wall, deep with many varieties of perennials, grasses, alchemilla mollis, roses and goodness knows what, was a source of inspiration for many.

The variety of work was very impressive; mixed media at every turn.

From Longstock Park Nursery to Wherwell Priory Studio

On Site at Longstock Park Nursery, and in the studio

  • 13th – 16th July,2015
  • £260/course, £150/2 days
  • 9.30am-4.30pm, meeting at Longstock nursery on 13th July

How do you create a piece of work that is based on a place, a feeling, an idea, but isn’t a direct copy?

Longstock Park Nursery is a busy working environment with areas of peace and tranquility. It is a place of texture, colour and pattern, and a place of hope and aspiration.

How can we start to translate all of this into one picture? The fun and excitement of it is playing around with different ideas, trying different things, making mistakes, editing and finding a way through that is entirely your own. This sounds daunting but DO NOT BE ALARMED.

Whatever your ability, beginner or seasoned professional, you will find a way in.

This course is a chance for you to create a piece of art based on research on site, and reflection in the studio. There will be a large element of sketching and visual note taking, followed by painting.

The course is set up over four days giving you a chance to work towards one piece or a body of work.

For more information contact Kate Measham on 01980 863155, or kate@artdrawpaint.com

#longstockInitially, you will spend a day sketching, photographing and making working drawings at Longstock Park Nursery, followed  by a day at work in the studio. The following two days will be more studio based but with garden centre visits, if necessary.

You are welcome to return to the nursery in the intervening days.

Longstock Park Nursery and Farm Shop is part of the John Lewis /Waitrose Group (http://www.longstocknursery.co.uk/). There is a beautiful deep border along the outside wall of the garden centre showing examples of the beautiful plants on offer within.

It has wonderful gardens with very well maintained borders, brick and flint walls, greenhouses, shops and a variety of things for sale. The Farm Shop sells a number of vegetables from the Leckford farms, and from other local sources.

Its coffee shop and cafe is a wonderful place to grab a bit to eat, and a moment to pause and think about what you are doing.

If we are hit by rain, the Farm Shop, greenhouse and garden shop should protect us from the elements
