Little or Large?

 Size Matters

What size image and what size support you use are very important elements in composition. Size matters.

What size paper/canvas/board are you working towards? What size image? What about the space?  It is so easy to pick up the same old sketch book and do the same thing time and again. Let’s make it more interesting. In this class you will be encouraged to be creative about size.

27th Sept. £45 /class  9.30am – 12.45pm

I think Tuesday is meant to be sodden.  If you want to come to this class at Wherwell Priory Studio contact me for more details and availability kate@artdrawpaint.com

Roche Court, East Winterslow

http://sculpture.uk.com/programme/darren-almond-new-work-in-the-gallery-and-park/

I went to Roche Court last week and saw the  new exhibition by Darren Almond. Below is a brief extract about some of his work there.  It is particularly relevant to this class.  He has produced beautiful paintings of hypothetical views of space with colour, light and distance captured in a strangely recognisable way. I have no idea what he is painting, but I know it is space. Into this space are tiny specks of distant stars. Their size and the size of pictures make you feel very, very small.

 Darren Almond: new work

17 Sep – 13 Nov 2016

Almond makes work which explores ideas about time, space, history and memory and how these abstract concepts intersect and impact on the individual. At the very core of his work is an exploration of time and space and for the viewer, they raise fundamental questions about our very existence.
In the gallery, Almond will show a series of ‘Timescape’ paintings, which explore his preoccupation with time and space to their absolute limits. They suggest the conundrum, that although we know a certain amount about deep space, there is still so much that remains – at least for now – unknowable. Conceptually, these depictions of the outer reaches of the cosmos engulf us in the beauty of the Milky Way; the colourful and dreamlike atmospheres which Almond has captured ultimately remind us of our insignificance within the enormity of the universe.

FREE taster day – Learning to Look

If you haven’t been to any of my classes before you might be a bit anxious about embarking on a course without knowing what you are letting yourself in for. Try this taster day, the first of the Still Life sessions of the term.

20th September,  9.30am – 12.45pm

Free ‘taster’ class open on a first come, first serve basis. Open to anyone whether you have been to a course with me before, or not. Please email me if you wish to come along; I need to know numbers.

This is the basis of all drawing and painting and is surprisingly easy to ignore, especially when you think you ‘know’ an object. There will be a number of exercises to help you really SEE what is in front of you.

This class will show you various ways to trick you into seeing what is in front of you.

More to Still Life than Onions

Autumn Still Life Series at Wherwell Studio

I have had worried calls from various people to say they can’t do the whole course, but can I break it down into bite sized pieces. Hopefully these newly batched classes fit the bill. The dates are the same as previously advertised, and it is still based on Still Life, but these approaches can be applied to other form of creativity.

What, How Big and Where shall I put it?

£45/1 class, or £120/3 classes, 9.30am – 12.45pm

20th Sept. Learning to look – This is the basis of all drawing and painting and is surprisingly easy to ignore, especially when you think you ‘know’ an object. This class will show you various ways to trick you into seeing what is in front of you.

27th Sept. Size Matters – What size paper/canvas/board are you working towards? What size image? What about the space?  It is so easy to pick up the same old sketch book and do the same thing time and again. Let’s make it more interesting. In this class you will be encouraged to be creative about size.

4th Oct. Composition and Repetition – It is tempting to dive straight in to a picture, full of enthusiasm, and ignore the boring planning. Don’t ignore it – embrace it. You will have a look at different types of composition, play with a few, and then dive in with enthusiasm.

Why is this in a Still Life?

£45/1 class, or £120/3 classes, 9.30am – 12.45pm

11th Oct. Narrative – Back to onions…There are lots of reasons to paint onions, but what are you trying to say? An onion, a kitchen knife, a cook book, and a soup bowl start to tell a story. A line of onions in various stages of being prepared tells a slightly different story. This class is all about what you want to say, and how to say it.

18th Oct. Everyday Items, Strange Compositions, Deviations – Let’s not be dull. This is a look at the ordinary and making it extraordinary.

8th Nov. Make it Personal – These are your paintings. What are you doing and why? How do you decide what to do next?

Back to the Onions…

£45/1 class, or £120/3 classes, 9.30am – 12.45pm

15th Nov. Cezanne does Still Life –Pretty much what it says on the box. You will be using Cezanne as a guide and inspiration for an oniony Still Life.

22nd Nov. Colour as it isn’t – This class will look at restricted palettes, and imagined colour. In your pictures you can use WHATEVER colour you like, but this freedom isn’t examined as much as it should be.

29th Nov. Throw Everything at it – Dreadful title, but that is what some people think about mixed media. Some think of it as Blue Peter goes wild in the Early Learning Centre. This class is about an open approach, exploring different effects, playing with resists, glue, anything to hand.

Still Life classes can be a bit dull.

The idea of this course is to have a look at a number of different creative approaches and apply these ideas to a Still Life.

Some of the things you will be looking at are: narrative paintings, size and composition, Cezanne’s approach to still life, strange compositions, playing with colour, found supports, repetition and deviation, making the everyday ‘special’ and making it personal. You will be encouraged to try fresh methods of doing things, and to play with new ideas.

It does not matter what materials you wish to use, these classes are about exposing you to different ideas. I will help you with any practical problems should they arise, so don’t let inexperience put you off. These classes should help you to find what you want to paint, and how you wish to do it.

20th September can be treated as a taster day to see if the course is right for you. This will cost £40 refundable against the rest of the course.

This class is appropriate for anyone, what ever materials they wish to use.   I will provide paper and charcoal for initial exercises. Other materials are up to you.
