Sarah Waters is an experienced, international artist and tutor, who works with fibres to create large scale wall hangings.
Sarah will be teaching you how to ‘paint’ with fibres to produce fabulous pictures, and using prefelts (half made pieces of felt) and fabrics (nuno) within the art of feltmaking. You will focus on design and colour mixing of the fibres, cutting and layering techniques to produce samples and a finished collage.

What to expect on this course

During the ten sessions Sarah will be there to guide you through each of the processes and will take time to discuss your individual ideas, developing your skills at your own pace.
All materials will be provided but if you have any extra fabrics or threads you would like incorporated then please do bring along (natural ones like silk or cotton are best). You might also want bring a picture, photo or a drawing to help inform your pieces.

Throughout the term you will be introduced to technical skills appropriate to your level of experience. Each day will start with a new technical skill exercise. Then, drawing on some of the previous skills and samples, Sarah will guide you through the process of starting to create your own textile art piece.
Students will continue to work independently with support from Sarah throughout each week. For those that have attended any previous courses you will have the opportunity to push your skills to a much deeper level, taking advantage of the small class size and the individual guidance from Sarah. We will also work with various topics to help you focus your ideas and push those of you with more experience.

During the second half of the term, you will be working on your own individual piece, inspired by a picture, photo or drawing. You will use the knowledge and techniques learnt in the first half of the term to achieve your desired outcomes. There will be time in the afternoon for Sarah to discuss your ongoing projects and we will explore each other’s finished work learning how to develop any future ideas.
