Sarah Waters is returning to Hampshire Art studio with another 5 week course for both beginners and for those more advanced students.

What level of experience is needed for this course?
This course is suitable for any level, from beginners to advanced.
Sarah Waters is an experienced, international artist and tutor, who works with fibres and fabrics to create large scale wall hangings.

Sarah will be teaching you how to use different fibres, prefelts and fabrics (nuno) within feltmaking. You will focus on design and colour mixing of the fibres, cutting and layering techniques to produce samples and finished felted pieces .
During the 5 sessions Sarah will be there to guide you through each of the processes and will take time to discuss your individual ideas, developing your skills at your own pace.
All materials will be provided but if you have any extra fabrics or threads you would like incorporated then please do bring along (natural ones like silk or cotton are best). You might also want bring a picture, photo or a drawing to help inform your final piece.
What happens each week
Week 1 Introduction day

Don’t worry if you haven’t tried wet felting before.
Sarah will introduce you to basic wet felting techniques and to the variety of fibres and fabrics used. You will be able to discuss and handle the samples and try out some of the different techniques throughout the day. There will be plenty of time for discussion and experimenting.
Weeks 2, 3 and 4 Technical Skills and Continuous Individual
Each day will start with a new technical skill exercise. Then drawing on some of the previous skills and samples Sarah will guide you through the process of starting to create your own textile art piece. Students will continue to work independently with support from Sarah throughout each week.
Week 5 Finishing Individual Textile Art – Overview and Debrief
During the final session you will continue to work on your individual piece. There will be time in the afternoon for Sarah to discuss outcomes and we will explore each other’s finished work learning how to develop any future ideas alone or at the next course






Materials
All materials will be provided but if you have any extra fabrics or threads you would like incorporated then please do bring along (natural ones like silk or cotton are best). You might also want bring a picture, photo or a drawing to help inform your final piece.
Students will need to bring:
- Pen and paper
- Camera/phone (optional) for visual reference
- Photo, picture or drawing for inspiration
- Sharp scissors
- Apron (optional) feltmaking isn’t messy but you may get a little wet
