Charcoal Drawing to Oil Painting, BBQ charcoal

Drawing is the first step for any visual representation; it has to be step one, step two and step three – after that you can take off in any direction.

Today’s class started with interesting drawings concentrating on tone and imaginative marks. They used willow IMG_2990charcoal, BBQ charcoal, rags, erasers and fingers. I love BBQ charcoal – you never know what is going to happen. If you feel like using it to draw with I would suggest you use the lumps not saturated in starter fluid. They managed to make a dullish Still Life (a stripped jug, two peppers and a pepper mill) into a thing of interest and beauty.

After battling with the drawings the class dived into the tonal oil painting as though it was easy. Drawing may be the answer to everything.
